What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapists are highly qualified health professionals who work in partnership with their patients to improve overall everyday function and reduce symptoms associated with injury.

Physiotherapists also work closely with GPs and other health clinicians to plan and manage treatment. GPs refer more patients to physiotherapists than any other healthcare profession. Using advanced techniques and evidence-based care, therapists in this field assess, diagnose, treat and prevent a wide range of health conditions and movement disorders.

Physiotherapy helps repair damage, reduce stiffness and pain, increase mobility and improve quality of life; essentially speeding up the natural healing process. This branch of allied health extends from health promotion to injury prevention, acute care, rehabilitation, maintenance of functional mobility, chronic disease management, patient and carer education and occupational health.

How can physiotherapy help my injury?

Physiotherapy can ensure your injury is thoroughly assessed and diagnosed correctly. This is essential to ensure the correct management plan is chosen for your condition. Physiotherapy treatment can speed up your body’s natural healing process, accelerating your return to sport or activity.

Appropriate treatment will also reduce the likelihood of recurrence by addressing factors which may have contributed to the development of your condition. Physiotherapists are experts in advising patients on which activities are appropriate for their injury to maximize recovery and ensure an optimal outcome.

When should you see a physiotherapist?

Seeing a physiotherapist can be helpful if you're experiencing any of the following. Early intervention often means quicker recovery, so it’s generally a good idea to seek help sooner if you’re experiencing any of these issues.

Persistent Pain

Pain that doesn’t improve after a few days or weeks, whether from injury, strain, or general discomfort in muscles, joints, or nerves.

Limited Mobilityor Stiffness

Difficulty moving normally, stiffness that restricts daily activities, or decreased range of motion.

Recovery from Injury or Surgery

Physiotherapy can guide recovery after injuries (like sprains, strains, or fractures) or surgeries (like joint replacements).

Recurring Sports or Physical Activity-Related Issues

If you regularly face aches, strains, or injuries from physical activities, a physiotherapist can help improve mechanics and prevent future issues.

Posture-Related Discomfort

If you have discomfort related to posture or work (like sitting at a desk), a physiotherapist can help improve alignment and ergonomic practices.

Chronic Pain or Conditions

Conditions like arthritis, back pain, or repetitive strain injuries benefit from long-term management strategies from a physiotherapist.
